Secrets to Success for Crushing Your Next Interview
“I’m not going to do it. I’m too scared.”
It was the night before a big interview, my husband and I were tucked in bed trying to watch a show, but all I could think about was the interview I had in less than 12 hours.
My breath quickened, and my chest tightened, panic moving through my body.
Looked over at my husband and blurted out that there was no way I could do it. I was just too scared. As the sweetest husband ever, he reassured me that I will be okay. I took his words to heart, but still needed to feel it for myself.
It was up to me to get out of my own way.
So, here are the practices I used that morning before my interview to shake the nerves, believe in myself, and crush it. I also teach these tips inside my leadership program!
#1 - Get into your own energy: Create a ritual that will help you be in your own energy. (Being in your own energy means grounding yourself, being in your essence, and not letting outside energy seep in and knock you out of balance.)
Whether that is doing a quick meditation, doing some breath work, dancing around to your favorite song, doing a power pose, lighting a candle, playing with your dog… seriously, whatever works. It’s your ritual.
No matter what it is, the point is to ditch any distracting outside noise, so put on your do not disturb and get to it.
Then, once you have grounded yourself into your energy, think of a time when you doubted yourself, and maybe other people doubted you, but you showed up, did the thing and freakin’ crushed it. Really imagine that time, and how you felt accomplishing that thing. Really feel it in your body. In your soul.
And from that energy, is when you will start your interview.
#2 - Be kind to your mind: Do you remember that scene from Cool Runnings when Yul Brenner is hyping up Junior to stand up to those bullies at the bar? “I see pride! I see power!” Do this.
Okay, maybe not exactly this, unless those words really will hype you up! But the truth is, the way you talk to yourself matters. Especially before an interview.
Remind yourself how qualified you are. Remind yourself how prepared you are. Remind yourself how BADASS you are. Remind yourself that it is 100% possible to get this job. It’s already yours.
Come up with your own mantras to say before an interview. Only you know what will work best for you.
#3 - Trust: Trust the process. I know, I know, it’s so annoying to hear. But I wouldn’t give you this tip unless it truly worked.
Trust your expertise and know you are qualified and prepared.
Trust your intuition to let the answers flow to you and out of you.
Trust your authenticity, values and integrity to shine through.
Most importantly, trust that no matter the outcome, you will only get better from this point forward.
So, there you have it!
I’m sure you know the drill to research the company and position, practice your responses, bring your resume, and have your questions ready for the end of the interview.
But, not a lot of people talk about this part of the interview preparation process, and it’s just as important.
Don’t worry, though, we do things a little different here.
This is Not Your Dad’s Leadership after all.
