How to Use Emotional Intelligence to Actually Lead the Room (Not Just Survive It)
She Read the Room. Then She Rewrote It. (Part 2 of 3)
Last week we talked about what's actually happening inside you when you walk into a tense room and let it decide who you're going to be that day. If you missed it, go read it first. This one builds on it…
Because, once you're the one running the show internally, once your nervous system isn't making all your decisions for you, something changes about how you show up with other people too.
That's what we're getting into today.
————————
Okay so here's what most women do with everything they pick up in a room.
They use it to protect themselves.
They clock that someone's in a bad mood and immediately tread carefully.
They feel the skepticism across the table and soften their position before anyone's even pushed back.
They sense the energy is off and decide to hold back — the idea, the opinion, the ask — until it feels safer.
Which makes complete sense. Reading the room to protect yourself is a survival strategy. It works.
Until it starts working against you.
Because here's what actually changes when you've done the internal work. When YOU are steady, when the room isn't running you, you stop using what you read to protect yourself and you start using it to lead.
It’s the same information. Just a completely different direction:
You walk in and immediately clock that someone hasn't bought in yet.
Old version: You sense the resistance and back off.
New version: You feel it, name it (maybe out loud, maybe just to yourself) and bring them in instead of going around them. You ask the question that gets them talking instead of hoping the resistance disappears on its own.
Or, you read that your team is overwhelmed and checked out.
Old version: You push through the agenda anyway because there's no time.
New version: You acknowledge it — even just a quick "I know this week has been a lot" — and watch the whole energy shift because someone finally said the thing everyone was feeling.
Or, you sense the room is waiting for someone to just take charge.
Old version: You wait too because what if you read it wrong.
New version: You feel it, you trust it, you step in. Because your read on the room is actually really good. It always has been. Now you're using it.
This is what it looks like to show up with other people from a regulated place. You're not reacting to the room. You're responding to it and rewriting it on your own terms, in a way that actually moves things forward.
And people feel that difference. Every single time.
She read the room. And then she used what she found to bring everyone else with her. 🌸
Next week: What this actually looks like before you walk in, in the moment, and after. AKA: The Monday morning version.
And if you want to work on this now, my 1:1 coaching calendar is open.
